Do Dogs and Cats Need Dental Care?

It is a common misconception that pets don’t need dental care, but they can get dental disease all the same. Just like people, dogs and cats also need regular dental care to prevent pain, tooth loss, infections, and long-term health issues. As a pet parent, you want to take the best care of your cat or dog as you can, and that includes taking care of their teeth. Our vets explain why dogs and cats need dental care and how you care for your pet’s teeth at home.

Why Is Dental Hygiene Important for Dogs and Cats?

Dental hygiene is just as important for your pets as it is for you. If dental infections are not treated, they can cause infections and diseases in other parts of the body. By getting your pet’s dental health checked regularly, you can prevent more serious conditions. For example, if your pet develops a dental bacterial infection and that infection gets in your dog or cat’s bloodstream, the bacteria can infiltrate the heart, lungs, or even their kidneys.

Signs Your Pet May Have Dental Problems

Pets are just as susceptible to dental problems as you are. They can get cavities and gum disease, and they can also suffer from painful tooth infections and tooth loss. It is important that you be able to recognize the symptoms of dental problems in dogs and cats so you can get your pet to the vet at the first sign of trouble.

Signs of dental problems in pets include:

  • Bad breath
  • Eating less, or difficulty chewing food
  • Visible tartar and plaque buildup
  • Red, bleeding, or swollen gums
  • Drooling more than usual
  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Behavior changes (hiding, irritability, less active, more aggressive, etc.)

Are Teeth Cleanings Really Necessary?

Yes—dogs and cats need regular dental cleanings to remove the plaque and tartar that cause infections and tooth loss. We recommend having your pet’s teeth cleaned by a veterinary dentist once a year. Cleanings should start at the age of one for cats and small dogs; larger dog breeds can usually wait until they are two.

Teeth cleanings prevent dental diseases, help your pet live longer, and improve their quality of life by removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria from your pet’s mouth.

How to Care for Your Pet’s Teeth

  1. Brush your pet’s teeth once a day. This may be difficult initially, but it will become easier as you and your pet become more comfortable. Please note that human toothpaste contains xylitol, which is toxic to pets. Consult your veterinarian to learn more about pet-safe toothpaste you can use.
  2. Only give your pets safe chew toys. The Veterinary Oral Health Council lists safe toys for your pet’s teeth.
  3. If you give your dog’s or cat’s treats, provide dental-friendly treats like Oravet..
  4. Schedule regular dental exams and cleanings
  5. Be patient and consistent with all the dental care you perform at home.
